Alfred John Ragas Sr.

May 6, 1938 – November 22, 2021

Alfred was born in Port Sulphur, LA to the late August B. Ragas, Sr. and the late Florence Turner Ragas. He was predeceased by his siblings: August B. Ragas Jr., Mervin J. Ragas Sr., Nelson D. Ragas Sr., Wilmer E. Parker and Florence T. Barthelemy. He is survived by his stepmother Marguerite, his brother Clark, his sister Valeria, and his many nieces and nephews.

At the age of 17, Alfred enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served honorably from 1955 until 1974. He also distinguished himself in combat with the River Patrol Force during his tour of duty in the Vietnam War.

In 1959, the Navy stationed him at the naval base in Rota, Spain, where he met and married the love of his life, the late Julia de la Iglesia Perez. Alfred and Julia were married for 55 years and raised six children together. They enjoyed traveling, dancing and especially spending time with family and friends. Alfred was also predeceased by his mother-in-law, Encarnacion Perez Alvarez.

In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his good friend, the late James R. DeHass – going to Dunkin Donuts for a coffee, taking walks around Battleship Cove, and going out to their favorite restaurants.

Alfred spent the last years of his life in Florida where he enjoyed watching the boats from the Venice jetty. His favorite pastime was sharing stories with his children and grandchildren and playing enthusiastic games of dominoes during their many visits.

Alfred will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched, but especially by his children and their spouses: Armando and Diana, Maria, Nadine and Russell, Alfred Jr. and Melinda, Michelle and Carl, and Carlos. His memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren: Haley, Connor and Trevor; Marcus and Justin; Alfred III, Robert, Rick and Melayna; Ian, Gabrielle, Lily, Julia and Ava and his many great grandchildren.

Alfred will also be missed by his loyal canine companion, Tramp.

Per his wishes, there will not be a memorial service at this time.

Any day I got to spend with you when I was a kid was always a great day. I remember when there were very strong winds from hurricane “Gloria” and you wanted to go see it. You come up to me and said quietly for me to go downstairs, go out the bulkhead door and meet you at the car. We raced down Grinnell’s beach to video tape it. We were out breaking the rules together and having a great time. We headed to Fort Barton to try to climb the tower for a better view but on our way we got pulled ver by the police and I thought that the fun was over. I sat in the seat as I listened to you lie to the police officer saying we were trying to get supplies, I sat there shocked then when we left, you looked at me and smiled and off we went to the tower. When we finally got home Mom wanted to kill you & me but it was all worth it.
