Ellen E. Smith, 78, of Venice Florida passed away December 29, 2020 in Sarasota. She was born January 25, 1942 in Woodstock, IL to the late Clarence Sparks and Marie Campbell-Sparks. She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1960. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree with honors from Northern Illinois University, and her Master’s Degree from Rockford College in Language Arts.   On June 16, 1962, she married Roger Smith.

Ellen devoted her working life to education. Her avid joy of reading motivated her to teach reading to struggling readers.  She ended her career at Canton Middle School after 33 years of teaching middle school. She was a devoted friend, who always remembered birthdays and special events. She loved to schedule fun, social events for friends and family.   She and Roger were also world travelers. They split time between their lake house in Wisconsin and their home in Venice, FL.  During their many travels, they visited all 50 states, rafted the Colorado in the Grand Canyon, visited the Great Wall of China and The Straits of Magellan as well as many other locations.

She will be remembered as a loving and kind wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.   She loved family adventures and treasured time with her grandchildren, reading, gardening, her friends, and sharing her life with her beloved husband.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Smith, daughter, Lisa Ritchey and husband Randy, son, Darryl Smith and wife Janice, grandsons, Tyler Smith and wife Kelli, Jake Smith, Dalton Ritchey and Connor Ritchey.  Private services will be held at a later date.

Dear Roger and family, it’s still hard to comprehend Ellen’s passing. I have known Ellen just in the last few years, and thought I had so much more time to laugh, play Mahjongg, golf, etc. with her. So very sorry for your loss and for all of us that knew her.
