Harold Ellsworth Smith, age 92, of Venice, FL, formerly of New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. He was born in Nutley, NJ on August 4, 1928, the son of Harry Smith and Emma Stager. In 1946 Harold became a member of the US Navy and held the ranking of First-Class Fireman; he was later honorably discharged in 1948. After being discharged from the Navy, Harold met the love of his life Alma Yeoman and they married in 1951. Harold and Alma were married 50 years before Alma passed away in 2001. Harold worked as a Lithographer for Continental Can Company in Passaic, NJ until he moved to Florida with his family in 1978. After moving to Florida, Harold worked for Sarasota County until he retired in 2006. After his retirement, he was bored and went to work for Walmart for 7 years.
Harold will always be known for his hard work ethic. He worked long hours and multiple jobs (also drove school and charter buses) to provide the best life for his family. He also had the ability to make people laugh. Harold had a love for cars and traveling. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Dennis) Kaufman and his son Keith (Courtney) Smith; his grandchildren Daniel Kaufman, Rachel (Dane) Burman, and Hailey (Zach) Dietz; he also had one great-grand daughter Riley Burman, who always could bring a smile to his face.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Smith; parents Emma Stager and Harry Smith; and siblings Irene Higbie, Joan Sito, and Stella Pestor.
A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shriners or St. Jude Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
