Obituary

Kathleen (Kathy) McCollum (nee Hughes) of North Port, Florida, passed away on January 14, 2021 due to complications of Covid-19. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph A. Hughes Jr. and Helen K. Hughes (nee King) and brothers Joseph A. Hughes III and Anthony C. Hughes.

Kathy was born on September 16, 1946 in Lansdown, PA, the youngest of four children. She attended St. Philomena Elementary School and graduated from Archbishop Prendergast High School, Drexel Hill, PA. She continued her education at Gwynedd Mercy University, Gwynedd Valley, PA graduating in 1968 with a BS in Medical Technology.

Kathy had a career in medical laboratories working for Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, PA, and Milton Hershey Medical Center in Hersey, PA. Upon moving to FL, Kathy continued her career and helped establish and manage a private medical laboratory for Dr. James Villotti, MD in Englewood, FL.

Kathy met her husband, Charles J. McCollum Jr. (Charlie) at the age of 15 and they spent 10 years together before they married on July 26,1969. Together they raised their children in Middletown, PA and Mount Gretna, PA. In 1996, they moved to North Port, FL so they could pursue their passion for sailing while enjoying the warm Florida sunshine.

Besides being a wonderful mother and loving wife, Kathy loved her beagles. She raised and rescued several and would walk three of them around the block becoming known as the “Beagle Lady”. Katie, her remining stray, is also saddened of the loss of her forever mother. Kathy had so many friends and was beloved by her extended family. She will be greatly missed. There will be a mass and a celebration of life in the near future.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband, Charles J. McCollum Jr.; daughter, Colleen McCollum of Astoria, NY; son, Charles (Chad) J. McCollum III (Amy McCollum) of Sarasota, FL; two grandsons, Seamus A. McCollum and Gabriel L. McCollum; and sister Mary Ellen Aicher.

Arrangements by Farley Funeral Home, North Port, FL.

I was lucky to have met Kathy and Charlie on a few occasions with Colleen and each time was such a happy occasion, she was always smiling and you couldn’t help but smile with her. I am so sad such a wonderful person has been taken so young and my heart goes out to my wonderful friend Colleen and her family and friends who will miss her so much 💜

I’m so saddened and still in shock by Kathy’s sudden and unexpected passing. Having been one of Colleen’s besties for many years, I was lucky enough to get to spend time with Kathy.I have such wonderful memories of the one Christmas I got to spend with them, our meet ups during their NYC visits and the many family thanksgivings they allowed us to be a part of. I remember her as a wonderful and vibrant woman who managed to light up a room. Her goofiness made me laugh all the time. Kathy, I will miss you! Myself, my family and Jordan would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Charlie, Colleen, Chad, Katie, Amy, Seamus, Gabriel, Mary Ellen and the rest of the family and sending love, prayers and strength during this difficult time. Hugs, Tamara, Jordan, Jenny, Rob, Anika and April

I remember Kathy's sense of humor so well. Though we met only a handful of times, she made such a wonderful impression on me; a joy of life. I see her smile often and laugh whenever I remember her mischievous side. A mother to many, may you know the kindness of your Mom is being returned to you multiplied many times.

Joe and I are very saddened by Kathy's passing. So many memories...Fitzgerald Mercy, Lankenau, Middletown, Mt.Gretna, where we enjoyed the Art Show (and Kathy's potato salad) for so many years and Northport, where more memories were made. There were also the occasional get-togethers on the Jersey shore. We will miss her laughter, her outgoing personality, her flaming red hair and her stories. She was one of a kind. May the wonderful, fun memories of Kathy sustain all of you during this very difficult time. God bless.

My deepest condolences for the loss of this family’s matriarch. I’ve heard many a great story from Colleen ... her travels and excursions with her mom. Colleen’s many trips home - especially for Christmas, and of course their New York City adventures when her mom would visit. Colleen, I’m sending you and your entire family love, prayers, and strength, during what must be an excruciating time. May your mom Rest In Peace.

Thoughts of our 4 years together at Gwynedd as a “group of eight” bring back many fond & funny memories. Kathy held a special place in our hearts as the only red head among us & she could always encourage a smile even when we were trudging along to Mrs. Gross’s dreaded class. Her laugh made us all feel better. Charlie & family, I am truly sorry for your loss; for our loss.

Kathy was an amazing lady. She was so much fun. You could never be in a bad mood when she was around. I worked with her for many years at HMC. We went to the Mt Greta Art Festival together and then back to her house for a picnic. I am grateful for the time we spent together. I will treasure those memories. Charlie, Colleen, Chad and family I am so sorry for your loss. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Kathy could light up a gathering with her laughter and abundant energy. Her Christmas newsletters were a joy to read. They were filled with loving thoughts of her family and her own adventures. I send my sincere condolences to Charlie, her children Chad and Colleen, and her beloved grandchildren. May you all find peace in the wonderful memories and happiness that you shared as a family.

So very sad for this news! Kathy was part of the 'Gwynedd group' -- we got together whenever we could in Philly or at the shore. I remember our trip to Daytona back when we were freshmen-- poor Kathy with her red hair was sunburned the first day! We had fallen asleep on the beach after a long train ride. She spent most of the trip in the room(excdpt at night when we went out!) She and Charlie were such a great, loving couple! Together for so many years! Pray God takes care of her family and especially Charlie---losing a spouse is not like any other lose.
