Obituary

Joseph George Roddy, 86, of Venice, Florida passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021.  Joseph was born November 22, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the son of the late Martin J. and Delia (Healy) Roddy.  Survivors include his wife Dorothy; sons Daniel, Martin, Joseph and Patrick; two daughters Mary Maguire and Kathleen Roddy, (preceded in death), seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.  He also leaves two stepdaughters, Melissa Ferguson and Amy Handel, and 7 step grandchildren. Joe was a member of the US Navy and served in the Korean War.  His career spanned 41 years with the Department of Defense, rising to the level of Deputy Director for a period of time. He also served as a logistics manager in the Directorate of Materiel Management, Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey.  He retired from that position in 1998 when he and his wife Dorothy moved to Venice. He joined the Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning, (SILL), becoming the moderator for the program at the Venice location for several years.  He followed the Philadelphia Phillies all through his life and went to watch spring training in St. Petersburg.  He shared many happy memories throughout his life with anyone he met, finally writing a book about them called, “Growing up in Heaven”.  That was a labor of love for him and a source of enjoyment for all who read it.  His faith gave him the strength to handle many difficulties he faced, including his health problems in the last year. He was a great storyteller and had a story for any occasion.  He will be missed by all who knew him.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joe’s name to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Florida 34238.  To post a condolence for Joe please visit www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
