Keith Arlyn Bos, 82, of Sterling, IL passed away in Venice, FL on February 28, 2021 and left us to be with our Lord along with his mother, father and many great friends who departed before him.  Keith was born on September 25, 1938 to Henry and Hattie Bos in Morrison, IL. He attended Sterling High School and graduated in 1956.  Keith was an all-state quarterback and participated in track and field, basketball and was a member of the “S Club”.  Keith then served in the Army for 2 years in Fort Riley, KS and specialized in medic training and played Army base football which then earned him a football scholarship to Eastern New Mexico University.  After a brief illness he returned home and married his high school sweetheart Carol Wilkinson in 1960.  Keith attended Northern Illinois University and graduated in 1962 with a degree in Special Education.  Keith then went on to attend University of Illinois thru night and summer school coursework and graduated in 1968 with a Masters Degree in Education.  In 1963 Keith became a Special Education teacher at Sterling High School and also coached SHS football and track and field for many years.  In 1975 Keith became Assistance Vice Principal (“Dean”) at Sterling High School until 1994 at which time he received early retirement.  Keith influenced the lives of many former students during this period.  After his time at SHS Keith then went to work for the Sterling Township for 4 years to develop a student tutoring and meal assistance program.  Keith then was employed by Sauk Valley Community College as a Student Needs Coordinator from 1998 to 2008.

Keith was passionate about his everyday running and weightlifting and those who knew him often would see him running outside north of the high school in all weather conditions even in below zero temperatures.  Keith lived for his Sterling Golden Warriors and was usually present at every SHS home football game even in his most recent years.  Keith will be remembered as a loving, kind, devoted, compassionate, and patient husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor and friend.  He valued friendship and family above all else and adored his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Keith is survived by his wife of 61 years Carol Bos, his son Jon (Christine) Bos of Wilmington, NC, his daughter Cara (Mark) Sterenberg of Sterling, IL, grandson Joshua Paxton of Seattle, WA, grandson Shane Sterenberg of Sterling, IL, grandson Maxwell Bos, granddaughter Zoe Bos, granddaughter Lucy Bos of Wilmington, NC, brother Gary (Marjorie) Bos of Fort Myers, FL, sister Audrey Harden, sister Betty (Larry) Pope of Sterling, IL, and several nieces and nephews.

My deepest condolences to the Bos family. Keith was a pillar of the Sterling community and a brick in the foundation of Sterling High School. He was respected by everyone who knew him and every student who walked through the halls of SHS holds a special memory of him. I especially remember when he and I would be the last ones in the gym. He’d be lifting weights in the far corner of the ol’ balcony weight room and I’d be be shooting hoops alone under the light on the main floor. Back in the early 70’s long before the time women’s sports was accepted, he always took the time on his way out the door to give me, a girl, a word of encouragement. I have never forgotten him or his words. He will always be remembered by all the McKinzie's.

It is so rare to find a high school Dean Of Students that is respected and admired by both teachers and students. Kieth was that personified. As a teacher, I admired the way he handled behavior situations. There were never favorites or targets. Students knew that. His legacy will live on in all of those he came in contact with. My heartfelt feelings of sympathy to his entire family.

Mr Bos will forever hold a special place in my heart. Not only was he there as my high school principal but also after graduation. While working for the Township in 97 he helped me get my first apartment as a single mother, and I will forever be thankful and grateful for his kindness and his warm heart. My last time seeing him was at Kroger and he told me I was looking good and I told him the same. I wish now that I had talked to you more that day, not knowing it was the last time I would see you. You will be truly missed by so many and I am so thankful that God saw fit to place you in my life when he did. Your job here is done, and you are home free, well and whole again. Please watch over us all! My condolences to the family of Mr Bos, and all who loved him.

My deepest condolences and sympathies go out to the family of Keith Bos. I interjected with him as a fellow educator, especially in his position at Sauk. He was a wonderful educator who will be remembered by all those he encountered. As a fellow special educator, he was a kindred spirit drawn to those who didn’t fit conventional education. He will be richly blessed and rewarded in Heaven. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lird and let perpetual light shine upon him.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of such a kind and genial man. When I was a sophomore, Mr. Bos called me out of class for not dressing for PE. (I was going through a weird stage and wearing half-uniform, half-regular clothing.) I explained it to him, and he laughed and sent me back to class. He said he was really surprised, as was my class, to have to call on me. Mr. Bos lived one street from me and I was always happy to see him out and about. As for his grandchildren, I babysat some of you when you visited. You are lucky to have had such a wonderful grandpa. My heart goes out to you all.
