Obituary

Rita J. Cholewczynski , 91, of Venice, FL passed away at 6:15pm on Sunday, March 21, 2021, at Gardens of Venice. She was born March 19, 1930 to Edward and Genevieve (Zientowski) Mlezcek. Rita married Norbert on May 30, 1950.
Prior to becoming residents of Venice, FL in 2004, Rita and Norb enjoyed the snowbird life for 11 years, spending the winter months in Venice. Prior to 1993, they were full-time residents of South Bend, IN and were the owners of Last Stop Liquor store. Both she and Norb loved the Florida sunshine, however they definitely missed the Polka music and Polish meals they shared with their life-long friends and family in South Bend. Rita would always call Venice her “paradise” and she especially loved to sit and watch the ocean sunsets from her condo. She never missed a card game, playing 5 times a week with her friends. In the mornings, you would find her at her favorite breakfast spot, McDonald’s, where she and her friends would sit for hours sipping a cup of coffee. Rita was a member of the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, FL.
Rita is preceded in death by her husband Norbert. She is survived by her two daughters, Janice (Joseph) Cunningham of Venice, FL, and Judy Jankowski of Mishawaka, IN; four grandchildren, Jeff (Lisa) Cunningham of Lakewood Ranch, FL, Jill (Tony) Reinert of Powder Springs, GA, Corey Jankowski of Indianapolis, IN, and Dan (Colleen) Jankowski of South Bend, IN. Rita also leaves behind two loving great grandchildren, Lauren and Jacob Cunningham, both of Lakewood Ranch, FL.
Visitation will be from 10am to 12pm Friday, March 26th at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1pm Friday, March 26th at Epiphany Cathedral. Burial will follow at Venice Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Tidewell Foundation, 5955 Rand Blvd. Sarasota, FL 34238. Dear Janice and Judy, Was so sad to read in the South Bend Tribune that your mom had died. What a beautiful lady she was! I am so happy that I spent my many years at the Walnut Street home with your mom and the two of you and the rest of the family. Lots of wonderful memories. Loved everyone there! You two were like my little sisters. I will have a Mass said at St. Casimir's for her.

Dear Janice and Judy, I’m so sorry for your loss. Your mom was special and she will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Glad she could be with family in her last days before seeing uncle Norbert in heaven. Love to you both.

Delighted and privileged to meet Mrs. Cholewczynski about three years ago during a visit to Venice. She was a strong, kind and thoughtful lady and an excellent representative of what now has come to be known as the “Greatest Generation.” My condolences go to daughter, Judy, and other members of the family as well as friends and associates.
