Thomas Theodore Schultz (Ted), 81, of Venice, Florida, passed away on February 1, 2021 at Venice Regional Bayfront Health Hospital after a three week battle with COVID 19.  Shortly before his admission to the hospital, Ted completed a 46 mile biking trip with his friends.  Throughout his hospital stay, Ted showed his strong determination to beat this horrible disease.

Ted was born in Williamsport, PA on August 7, 1939 to the parents of Carl Melhman and Grace Elizabeth Schultz.  Ted earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Susquehanna University in 1961.  While attending Susquehanna University, he met his lovely wife Katherine Smith (Kathy).  After graduation, they married on September 2, 1961.  Ted was drafted into the United States Army and honorably discharged in 1968.  He was employed by National Cash Register (NCR) where he worked with small businesses in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1971 he began his own public accounting practice in Annapolis, Maryland and later became licensed as an Enrolled Agent by the Federal Government in 1991.

While living in Annapolis Ted was actively involved in the community, serving on the Boards of The Maryland Society of Accountants, Severn Bank, The Annapolis Optimist Club, the board of trustees for the Maryland Society of Accountants and Tax Practitioners and the Forest Office Park Condo Association.  Ted also served as a faithful member and servant of St. Martins Lutheran Church and Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church in Maryland.  Ted’s commitment to the accounting and tax profession made him a beloved resident of Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Ted moved to Venice, Florida in 2010 where he continued to practice in a semi-retired capacity. While in Florida, Ted remained involved in his community.  He served as a volunteer at the Venice Regional Bayfront Hospital and as a faithful member and servant of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, Florida.  For over five decades, Ted provided service to his community in business, accounting, tax preparation, education, and volunteer work.

While Ted’s professional life was impressive, his personal time and retirement was awe inspiring.  Ted was an avid boater his entire life.  He held a United States Coast Guard captain’s license and ran a water taxi/tour business in Kent Narrows, Maryland.  While on the water he also enjoyed kayaking, water skiing, crabbing, and rockfishing.  He was an avid outdoorsman who modeled wellness and fitness to the community.  He was an active member of the Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club, the Venice YMCA, and played pickleball weekly.  He enjoyed camping and hiking with family and friends throughout his entire life. Ted’s mantra in life was stay close, don’t wait, and keep moving!

Ted was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Grace (better known as Mumsey and Dudley), and his brother, John Schultz.  He is survived by his beloved wife Kathy, and his children, Judy Ann Bernstein (Jake), Chris Schultz (Mannie), Sandi Schultz (Michael), and Tim Schultz (Kristen).  He is also survived by his six loving grandchildren, Ashley Blair, Megan Blair, Jessica Bernstein, Hannah Gourley, Jack Blair, and Hayden Gourley; and his siblings, Barbara Conord (Al), Bonnie Platzer, and Bill Schultz (Simona).

Dear Kathy, the news of Ted's passing has saddened us. Ted has meant so much to us over the last 42 years. He has been a good friend as well as a wonderful advisor. I will miss being able to reach out to him when I need advice. Sandi tells us that you have moved back here to Maryland. That is good for all of you to be close to one another. Stay safe and healthy and know that we are thinking of you and your family. Sincerely, Beverly and Carl

Ah Ted! You will be sooooo missed! What a role model you have been!!!❤️❤️❤️ We first met Ted as he was beginning his Water Taxi business. He and Susan, also a water taxi captain, carried many people through the Kent Narrows and became good friends! We had no idea he was such a gifted Tax preparer, but in 2001 Susan became self employed and Ted really helped us( then and ever since!) Around 2005, he helped me start up a small Art business, and I am forever grateful for the sound advice he gave us. We left the East coast 6 years ago, but prior to that it was always wonderful to meet up with Ted and Kathy, and reminisce about the crazy customers late at night on the Water Taxi! We picture Ted Water skiing his way across heaven, a place made sweeter by his presence! Kathy, Sandi and family, you are in our hearts! We just LOVED Ted so much!!! Very fondly, Cindy and Susan Brittain

Ted was a mentor in business to my mother, Karen, and a good friend of the Carolan Family for many years. He took several of us out on his boat in Annapolis and was a kind, fun guy to be around. I know he will be missed and remembered by so many. Our thoughts and warm wishes are with his family now and ever.

Wonderful friend! We met in St Margarets when our children were little and they too shared friendships. Shared many fun memories, ponies, ocean city, boating etc. We have lost a true friend. Lois and Dave Zeyher

To the entire Schultz family, and especially Kathy and Sandi: I am deeply saddened to learn of Ted's death. I heard about it through the accounting and tax preparation community in Annapolis, but could not believe it until I found the beautiful obituary here. Please accept our deepest condolences and prayers for your well being and peace. Ted taught me so much about the profession of tax preparation and client relationships. I will always be grateful for his mentorship.
